Annapurna IV Expedition Overview

Annapurna IV (7,525m /24,688 ft) is one of the peaks in Annapurna massif, located in the central-west Nepal, which holds significant importance in the history of Himalayan mountaineering. Annapurna I (8,091 m / 26,545 ft), the tenth-highest mountain in the world, was the first of all fourteen 8,000-meter peaks ever to be successfully climbed. This historic and groundbreaking ascent was achieved on 3rd June 1950 by a French expedition led by Maurice Herzog, officially known as the “Expédition Française àl’Annapurna (1950)”, referred to as the ‘1950 French Annapurna Expedition.

Annapurna IV is climbed from north side via Manang Valley and is considered one of the most demanding 7,000-meter peaks. The mountain is characterized by steep routes, long ridgelines, an elegant pyramidal shape, large cornices, and highly exposed faces and offers blend of Himalayan grandeur and a true expedition in the Himalayas.

The Annapurna massif which consists of six major peaks: Annapurna I (8,091 m / 26,545 ft), Annapurna II (7,937 m / 26,040 ft), Annapurna III (7,555 m / 24,786 ft), Annapurna IV (7,525 m / 24,688 ft), Gangapurna (7,455 m / 24,457 ft), and Annapurna South (7,219 m / 23,684 ft), is renowned for very high concentration of the most technically challenging peaks.

Annapurna IV was first successfully summited on 30th May 1955 by a German expedition led by Heinz Steinmetz, along with climbers Harald Biller and Jürgen Wellenkamp. There have been some records that members of the earlier French Annapurna expedition may also have climbed Annapurna IV; however, no verified accounts exist to support this. The French expedition did though explore entire Annapurna massif for mapping.

This provides an exceptional balance of challenge, safety, and high-altitude exposure, making it ideal for mountaineers progressing toward 8,000-meter summits. This peak is categorized as TD+ to ED (Très Difficile / Very Difficult to Extrêmement Difficile / Extremely Difficult) and is technically harder than 8,000-meter peaks like Cho Oyu and Manaslu, but with altitude ease.

Satori Adventures provides comprehensive and high-end personalized services from itinerary planning, documentation, logistics and ground handling, to climbing assistance of the best Sherpa guides.

If you are novice climber in the mountains, then Annapurna IV is not suitable for you. You should have previous experience in steep ice climbing (50°-60°), rock climbing, and prior summits of 6,000–7,000-meter technical peaks. Ideal preparation peaks can be Ama Dablam (6,812 m / 22,349 ft), Baruntse (7,129 m / 23,389 ft), and Pumori (7,161 m / 23,494 ft). Annapurna IV is also a good preparatory peak for Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, K2 and similar demanding 8,000-meter peaks.

Approach to the Mountain and Various Camps

After arriving in Kathmandu, you begin preparations and join the climbing briefing session. Then, you drive from Beshisahar to Chame and trek to Humde in the pristine and beautiful Manang Valley along the Marshyangdi River. From Humde, you leave the Annapurna Circuit trekking trail and hike off towards Annapurna IV Base Camp along small streams, crossing beautiful alpine pastureland.

You climb a steep hill and walk on moraine to reach the Base Camp of Annapurna IV at 4,800 m / 15,748 ft. The base camp offers a picturesque venue with an excellent panorama of Annapurna II, III, IV, and other surrounding peaks. Camp I, at 5,500 m (18,045 ft), is generally pitched above the Annapurna IV glacial lake area on a snow slope and moraine. You have to climb a pretty challenging rocky slope to reach this camp on fixed lines, with steepness reaching up to 60°–80° on sharp rock blocks.

Camp II, at around 6,500 m (21,325 ft), is pitched in a flat, level area and offers a breathtaking view of Mt. Manaslu, towering at 8,163 m (26,781 ft) on the left horizon, whereas the daunting wall of Annapurna II dominates the immediate leftward vista. Many other peaks surround you.

And, Camp III, at 6,800-6,900 m, is the final camp on Annapurna IV and offers magnificent views of the mountains. From this camp, you push to the summit (7,525 m / 24,688 ft) and return.
